I'm not quite sure when my love of Scandinavian decorating began. It may have started with my first trip to IKEA, the simplistic approach taken, or the way everything seems to be hand crafted with love. Regardless of the when or were I LOVE Scandinavian decor.

I first bought straw star ornaments and tree topper at IKEA several years ago and then added to it a straw wreath. Wouldn't you know that my cats loved my straw ornaments as much as I did and reduced my collection by a few.

You will find a lot of red and white in Scandinavian Christmas decorating.

Who is not a fan of The Muppets? With the new Muppet movie out in theaters I think it only fitting to celebrate with a new nail color to fit the occasion. With names like Gone Gonzo!, Fresh Frog of Bel Air, Gettin'Miss Piggy With It!, Animal-istic, Meep - Meep - Meep, Wocka Wocka!, Warm & Fozzie and many more I have fallen in love.

Take a trip to your local Target, CVS, or other O.P.I selling store and rock some Muppet color. Even if you prefer a more neutral pallet I would reserve the your little piggies for the Divine Swine.

Operation Christmas Child

I know! I'm talking about Christmas and I've skipped Thanksgiving completely. I'm not entirely skipping Thanksgiving but letting you know about something going on this week.

As a child my family would fill shoe boxes with gifts for children all over the world who were a little (or a lot) less fortunate. This year I am starting the tradition with my own children and I have to tell you I think I got more out of watching them shop for their child.

My oldest chose a girl her age and my second daughter chose a boy. We made a trip to the dollar store and Target and filled the cart with toys, toothpaste and toothbrushes, candy, a note from my daughters and a prayer. It was THAT easy. I would suggest that if you can afford it buy a plastic storage box the size of a shoe box for your gifts. This way the box can be used for other needs after it is emptied.

Tonight, after Daisies, my daughters and I will take the shoe boxes to a drop off location (usually a local church).

Samaritans Purse has this wonderful feature that lets you track your shoe box so my children will be able to see where their gift goes. Each shoe box requires a $7 donation to cover the cost of shipping and such.

I have always been a big fan of Eric Carle and the technique he has for creating his illustrations. The patience that man must have to paint tissue paper is more than I possess. The story The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the best children's books ever written and is full of color and imagination. Pottery Barn Kids currently has an entire line of bedding, wall art and bathroom things devoted to Eric Carle's illustrations and it had me looking for party ideas and crafts that I can do at home.

Life has been busy, but there is always time for birthday's and cake. Recently a friend of mine asked me to make a birthday cake for his wife. Nothing fancy just a cake. I wanted to portray my friends personality which is fun and artistic and she is a new mommy as well. (we had our son's on the same day)

I've made birthday pennants before but none as tiny as this. All you need are two wooden dowels, string, paper, hot glue and scissors. I cut a diamond out of the paper, folded it in half over the string and hot glued it shut. Tie the two ends of string to the wooden dowels and insert into your cake. The hardest part is choosing what paper you want to use.

Camden

After taking his precious time in arriving (one week late) Camden has captured our hearts.

His big sisters (aka little mothers) are loving him to bits. He has NO idea what he's in for!

We are all operating on very little sleep but are soaking up every little smile and enjoying this time together.

Posts may be few and far between with adjusting to having an infant in the house again and my "baby" starting Kindergarten next week! I will try to hold it together until after the school bus leaves:)

Ouch Pouch

Summer, more than any other season, is a time for boo boos. My girls have scrapes and bruises on their legs, arms, chins (you name the body part) from visits to the playground or just playing outside. I've always kept a small cosmetic bag in my purse filled with band aids, Tylenol and antiseptic but never thought of such an attractive pouch to put them in. I was browsing Etsy this morning and stumbled across the Ouch Pouch and had to share with everyone.

There is a huge array of patterns and sizes to choose from and uses for each. My favorite one's are the one's with the clear front flap so that I can see everything inside in a hurry. I love the idea of adding a lollipop to the pouch to help make everything feel better. (seems to always work)

Things to Do this Summer

If you're like me the summer is here and gone before you know it. I'm always looking for ways to draw the last drop out of summer and I have the urge to do so even more with my oldest starting Kindergarten this fall. (How is that possible?!?)

Grab some craft sticks and have your children decorate them and allow to dry. Then gather your family together and make a list of things you want to do this summer. Some can be realistic ideas or just pie-in-the-sky dreams. Write one idea on each craft stick and make an effort to pick one each day and try to have fun with it. I made a list with my husband and girls over the weekend and was really humbled by the simple things they wanted to do when I had been stressing over classes to enroll them in and activities to keep them "busy" all summer.

Camden's Nursery

I have mentioned before that Camden's room has taken on many theme's. It started out as an African theme then a world travel theme and then an aviation theme. The result is a mixture of all three and I would like to think that I pulled it off pretty well.

The changing table is actually an IKEA bookcase turned onto it's side and can later be turned upright for books and things. The circle rugs were found at TJmaxx but IKEA sells similar one's as well.

The giraffe and zebra print pillows were a great find at Wal-mart in their outdoor section.

Pottery Barn Kids

This ad for Pottery Barn Kids was the inspiration for the map art I created for the nursery. I searched high and low for old maps and could not find exactly what I was looking for without spending a lot more than I anticipated. I finally found exactly what I wanted (and more) in my mother-in-laws basement where they keep all of their old National Geographic's. The maps inside of the old magazines were perfect and costed me nothing!

The monogram made out of buttons was an idea I had found while searching the web for button art ideas. A quick stop to Michaels for the frame and Wal-mart for the buttons was all I needed. I printed out the letter and traced it onto some scrapbook paper I already had and then simply glued the buttons onto the traced letter.

My daughters wanted to add their own touch to the room so they painted two airplanes (also purchased at Wal-mart) and placed them on two shelves.

This mobile was purchased when I was decorating my oldest daughters nursery and I never used it but stored it away for a day when I thought I would need it. Well this mobile was turned into.....

This!!!

I used leftover maps that I had from the other projects and made paper airplanes out of them then super glued them to the string. I am now a "master" at making paper airplanes after watching a wonderful YouTube tutorial video.

It has been a lot of fun to decorate for the arrival of our little boy. I am still finding idea's that I would LOVE to incorporate into the room but there is only so much space to decorate and I think more would just be more at this point.

It's a room that makes my husband and I smile when we walk into it and I hope Camden grows to love it too.

The Many Uses of Mason Jars

I have the fondest memories of my grandmother taking my grandfather a mid morning snack while he was out plowing the fields. It would most likely consist of a Little Debbie cake and some sweet tea that she would pour into a mason jar. I loved this memory in part because I was given a snack at the same time but also because I remember my grandfather always giving my grandmother a kiss or a swat on the tush before climbing back onto the tractor. So much love.

Mason jars bring up images of summer for me. It may be because my mother was busy canning fruits and vegetables in the summer and I remember the kitchen being full of mason jars. The jar above is not a mason jar but the idea is what I'm going for. When you pack for a picnic and you want to take a long something a little more classy than PB&J this fruit, cheese, and herb skewer would do the trick.

What is a summer without catching fireflies? This idea from Southern Living is a wonderful party favor idea for a backyard BBQ or something for you to use with your children one evening after dinner.

The wonderful eye candy above, provided by Pottery Barn, is ingenious. Take a simple jar and create a permanent light fixture for your kitchen, dining room, office...you name it.

Hanging Mason jar lanterns from your trees can create the perfect romantic mood in your own backyard. The wonderful thing about this project is how affordable it is!

When you do not need candlelight try this beautiful decoration of floating flowers. This was used for a wedding but I would use it for any outdoor celebration.

I've only just scratched the surface of the many uses of the Mason jar. Next time you are in Walmart or the grocery store buy a box of Mason jars and let your creative juices flow.

Air Travel Kid's Room Ideas

I have two beautiful daughters and I thoroughly loved putting together their baby nurseries and "big girl" bedrooms however, expecting a little boy in the next couple of months has sent my creative juices into overdrive. I have found too many ideas that I "just have" to incorporate into my little guys room. For example. The nursery started out with an African safari theme which has grown to incorporate world travel AND air transportation. Your head is probably spinning right now. (welcome to my world!!!)

I recently returned from our vacation to the OBX and there is this wonderful air travel themed store within Kitty Hawk kites (located right across Jockey's Ridge) that sent my mind into a decorating whirlwind.

These are just a few of the mobiles that I saw handing from the store ceiling and of course instantly wanted them all. My husband (my voice of reason) gently explained (to the 7 month pregnant woman with crazed wide eyes) that it just might be too much for our young son to take in. We left the store with nothing but I had a load of ideas in my head for a rocking basement playroom some day!

In case you haven't noticed by now, I LOVE to hang things from the ceiling. Both of my girls had hand blown glass balls hanging over their cribs and beds for the first years of their life. It just draws your attention to all parts of the room...not just the walls. This kite idea from Pottery Barn Kids is just screaming imagination. I can picture Curious George holding onto one of the strings right now.

Bambi / Forest Friend 5th Birthday Party

My "baby" is now 5 years old! Seriously where did the time go?

Isabelle had requested a Bambi themed birthday party and since it is insanely hard to find Bambi themed things I broadened the theme to Forest friends as well. I lucked out in being able to use some decorations for the baby shower earlier in the week for the birthday party at the end of the week. Yay!

This was a super easy display to put together. I bought the fake moss at the dollar store (wonderful stuff) and the butterfly clips at Michaels. I already owned the bundles of sticks and had made the owls last month.

The menu included dirt dessert (complete with gummy worms), Jello jigglers in the shapes of squirrels and horses, cupcakes, fruit, popcorn, chocolate covered pretzel sticks and Cheetos.

The strawberry cupcakes were topped with homemade toothpick art. I found the forest friend scrapbook stickers and circle punch at Michaels and Isabelle and I assembled them all for our afternoon craft time.

I have to say the end result is quite cute:)

The hanging flowers were left over from the baby shower decor and the birthday banner was made by myself.

The activity for the party was to decorate your own owl mask which I found at Michaels as well.

Isabelle really enjoyed her party and has already decided what party themes she wants up to her 15th birthday party. I think I'll take them one at a time;)

My Busy May - Environmentally Friendly Baby Shower

You may have noticed that I have been MIA again and it is not due to lack of inspiration but an insanely busy month. (I know we are only two weeks into May!)

I had the opportunity to co-host an Environmentally Friendly themed Baby shower for my sister-in-law and my daughter's 5th birthday party all in the same week. Planning and crafting has been ongoing for many months so the culmination of everything has been exciting and tiring. Did I mention I have also been working on the artwork for my soon-to-be's nursery? My family has not seen the bottom of my dining room table in months so I think it's about time to clean and share what exciting things have been going on at my house.

"Green" Baby Shower Invite

My brother-in-law & sister-in-law just adopted the most beautiful little girl and since they live in Indiana we wanted to have a celebration with their family in Virginia as well. They are a very environmentally conscious couple and when asked what theme they wanted for the shower it was natural for them to request a "green" party. I admit that I had never heard of one before and thus began my research. I gathered a lot of inspiration from a baby shower thrown for Sheryl Crowe and from other's on the web.

The invitation was very simple to make. I bought a flower Martha Stewart punch, some buttons and card stock. My girls had loads of fun playing with all of the extra supplies!

When it came to party favor ideas I struck gold when I can across this idea for "green" gifts. I ordered the wildflower seed craft paper from Amazon and drew the earth onto it. I modified the poem to read:

...The whole world is made so sweet
By blooming flowers and tiny feet
So plant this globe, watch it grow
And think about the seeds you sew
To celebrate this happy news
Keep your own foot print tiny
For baby Maya . . .

I filled one of my glass mixing bowls with white beans and had a very inexpensive (and "green") vase filler. The parents were thrilled with the end result and so was I.

My sister-in-law is on a gluten free diet which was another area I have not ventured into. I found the health food aisle at Martins very helpful in finding crackers, cake mix, vanilla extract (who knew!) and other yummy food options that my sister-in-law could enjoy. I even found nitrate free bacon wrapped scallops at Costco!

I found the grass printed cupcake wrappers at Walmart during the Easter holiday which was a great find. I cut flowers out of fondant and used silver dragees for the middle of the flowers.

Chocolate Mousse Tarts

This was the only dessert that was not gluten free. I bought already baked pastry shells and filled them with chilled chocolate mousse that I made the night before and topped them with raspberries. They were delicious and SO easy to make!

Fruits and veggies were a natural menu choice. I had originally wanted to get to our local farmers market to pick up the produce but was attending an out of town wedding the day before so Costco was my market for this party.
The proud new parents were thrilled with the celebration and I enjoyed learning some new recipes and party ideas.

Family Circle

I've never been a big fan of dyeing eggs or decorating them for Easter. Honestly, if I am putting that much effort into something I would like to be able to use it year after year. These decoupage ideas from April's issue of Family Circle got me to thinking. Why not use plastic eggs or wooden eggs in place of the real thing and accomplish the same result?

My safari/world travel themed nursery has begun to take shape this week. I drew inspiration from the DwellStudio Menagerie crib bumper that I purchased from Target. All of the materials for the art were bought at Michaels. I found the most AMAZING handmade paper at the Michael's in Woodbridge, VA. I must of looked like a crazy woman since I spread out all of my paper choices on the floor and started mixing and matching my combinations. (I was in paper heaven!)
I am not a free-handed artist so I found images of the animals I wanted for the art and traced them onto my gorgeous paper. Each piece of art cost me less than $10 to make and saved me a bundle.

My next art project for the nursery involves world maps so if anyone knows of a good place to buy some please let me know. Stay tuned!

Craft Week at My House

This week has been spring break for my two munchkins and instead of being filled with warm temperatures and sunshine we have had snow and rain. So my plans have quickly been altered to inside activities and crafting for myself.

My oldest had been asking for a dinosaur themed party for her birthday for the past year. So like any mom I started gathering ideas. (Do you know how hard it is to find "girly" dinosaur things?) Then, about 2 months ago, my wonderful daughter changed her mind to wanting a Wall-E birthday party. Three weeks later she changed her mind (AGAIN) to wanting a Bambi birthday party. I put my foot down and declared this the last time the theme could be changed. Turns out that finding Bambi themed things is just as hard as finding "girly" dinosaur things. So we are having a Bambi/Forest critter birthday party!

All of that being said, the above is my version of Friend Owl in the Bambi movie. I got the idea from

I found all of the materials I needed at my local Michaels and the project took me a day to complete. (This includes MANY interruptions from two bored children) Let your kids pick the colors and you have a decoration for the kids bedroom after the party.

Color Combinations to Love this Spring

Tiny Prints

Grey has never been very high on my favorite color list or a color I use often for parties, decorating or on clothing. I have had a HUGE change of heart over the past week. I have begun the very enjoyable task of decorating the nursery and shopping in a section of Target that I have never before....the boys department! I am thrilled with the upcoming arrival of our little boy. In my shopping this weekend I noticed a trend in color combination's at the Carters outlet that sparked my change of heart. Combination's of grey and lime, grey and orange, grey and blue. The contrast is so very crisp and refreshing it embodies the definition of Spring for me. The grey of Winter is now being peppered with the bright and bold colors of Spring. (My English prof. would be proud)

This nursery idea looks "clean" to me. There could be (and will be) toys all over the floor but the color combination and modern lines create a sense of calm that is essential to a kids room. Like my aversion to the color grey I shared a similar view of modern design. Modern design seemed cold and stiff to me and some of it still does. The revelation for me was that I could accessorize with modern touches and still keep my comfy couch and warm wood tones. The same goes for the color grey. I am not ready to paint an entire room grey but I am planning on creating wall art for the nursery in some of these color combination's.

Lighten the Mood of your Home

I am in love I tell you. I do not know if it is because I love the colors of the coast or that anything resembling the colors of Greece have me swooning, but this collection by Sabrina Soto for Target has inspired me. This ad has appeared in every magazine that has arrived to my house and I think I cut out every one of them.

As mentioned in the title of this entry, it is time to lighten the mood of your home. During the cold months you want colors that emit warmth. Burnt oranges, browns, and golds are perfect for creating that "cocoon" feeling but once the weather turns warm I want to break out of that cocoon and fly.

The blue and white collection at target is classic, affordable, and crisp. I currently own a white sofa so I only needed the pillows to create this look but even if you own a tan piece these colors would work nicely.

The pillow above has caused me great frustration. I wanted to purchase this pillow to be the focal point of the collection of pillows I already purchased. I could not find it in the store or online. I even asked an employee, directly under a picture advertising the pillow, where I could find it and the response was to keep checking back. I checked online today and I found it....to be out of stock. (UGH!!!!) So my search continues.

The advantage to changing the mood of your home with accents is the affordability and the ease at which it is to change. My tastes are constantly changing (just ask my husband) and I cannot afford to repaint a room every season (or put my marriage to that test) so I change throw pillows, throws and comforters. I believe that every room needs a mood lifter, not just the family room. This collection also includes a bed set and bathroom set. Happy decorating!

Spring has Sprung Inside

My seasonal calendar varies slightly from the official calendar the meteorologist follows. Spring, or warm time as I like to call it, begins on March 1st. I may not be able to change the freezing temperatures outside but inside it can look like Spring. I own two slightly deranged cats that like to eat any living plant or flower I have inside so I resort to silk plants and flowers. The good thing is that I can store them in my basement and bring them out when I'm ready for them. The downside is that they do not emit the wonderful smells that daffodils possess. Regardless, I encourage you to invite an "early" Spring into your home and I hope to give you several ways of doing that this week.

Anna's Toy Story/Jessie Party

According to my last post (which was a LONG time ago) we just announced to the world that we are expecting our 3rd munchkin and I was in the throws of morning sickness. Well I have now surfaced from that 1st trimester "fun" and can now watch food commercials without feeling sick. YAY!!

My Anna turned 3 this month and she has been in love with everything Toy Story. Christmas was an explosion of Toy Story toys and that proved to be a very good thing for my decorating needs for Anna's party.

Wouldn't you know that all of the cute western themed scrapbook paper and decorations I've seen up till now magically disappeared! This happens with every birthday party and forces me to be more creative but this time I wanted to not have to be very creative!

I did turn to Etsy for party invitations, which I had never done, and I think I am now hooked. It was SO easy and the results were adorable. I would definitely recommend it.

The birthday banner is made of bandanna's with a piece of paper glued to the back of them to make them more stiff. I cut out the letter from brown construction paper and used a Toy Story stencil to make the characters for both ends. Hemp string and clothes pins held the banner together.

I got the inspiration for the cake from various images of Toy Story cakes I gathered online. It was a Devil's Food cake with store bought icing that I tinted for the top layer. I cut the cow spots and clouds from fondant and used some of Anna's toys for the topper. It was very easy to do and Anna absolutely LOVED it.

The kids made their own Mr. Potato Head's from foam cutouts. We had ears, nose, arms, mustache, lips and googly eyes. The kids loved being able to take their own Mr. Potato Head home with them.

Cowgirl cookie mix

Each family took home a jar of Cowgirl cookie mix. I got this idea from Bakerella and the parents loved having something to take home with them as well.

Kid's party favor

Each kid took home a bandanna filled with Toy Story memorabilia. This was extremely simple to put together. Walmart and Michaels were my places to get bandanna's.

The party came together very nicely and it was the perfect theme for my spunky Anna. The one piece of advice I would give to those of you throwing a party based on a licensed character or movie would be to think outside of the party box. I pulled the western theme from Toy Story and I've read of some people pulling the outer space theme from the same movie. Just be creative and you'll be surprised at the results.

Early Christmas Gift

I've been keeping a secret and I can finally reveal it. I'm having a baby!

Our third little one is due this July so that means I am in the middle of the joys of morning/afternoon/evening sickness. That would explain why I have been MIA lately and will be for the next month.

I know I could of picked a better holiday to skip than Christmas but I will just have to make it up to you next Christmas.

I am a big fan of wreaths on the windows. This year I simplified things and only put wreaths on the inside of my bedroom windows. I did not want to put any wreaths on the front of the house this year but still wanted to use them. I will enjoy them as will the cows in the pasture behind my house.

I LOVE monograms. I don't know if it's a southern thing or just a Lisa thing but it is a statement of "This is who I am and I am proud of it" kind of thing. Make sense?

I am now on the hunt for wooden letters like these that I can paint and put my own spin on for my front door.

Christmas is Coming

My husband told me that as a child he would tell his parents he wanted a certain toy and the response was always "Christmas is Coming". Well Christmas is coming...rapidly!
I LOVE Christmas. I am the one who wants to put up the tree in October and I am the first to know which radio station has FINALLY started to play Christmas carols. I love Christmas.

Over the next month I will be sharing some of my Christmas traditions and some new one's I have discovered. These posts may be far between due to the cookie baking, present shopping and just enjoying the season but I will try to post enough eye candy between now and Christmas for us to enjoy.

With only a few days until Thanksgiving I am sure you are busy getting last minute groceries bought and table linens ironed. I have been doing the same.

With the menu written down and everything organized for a smooth Thanksgiving meal I thought I was ahead of the game! Until I realized I did not have a centerpiece idea or place card idea.

I had never heard of the word pomander before but I had seen them all over Colonial Williamsburg and loved them. This is super easy to make and smells even better. Simply buy some oranges and whole cloves and push the cloves into the orange in any pattern you desire.

This was the inspiration for my place cards. I already have the materials needed. Just draw the letter onto the orange with a pen, poke holes along the lines with a push pin and then insert the clove. This is a great gift for your guests as well.

Thanksgiving - Ways to say "Thank You"

You all know how I love the idea of message trees. This is a wonderful idea for Thanksgiving. Have each person write what they are thankful for on a tag and tie it to a tree branch. At the end of the meal take the tags down and read them aloud to your guests.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to give thanks to the one's you love. I started to think of ways to let those friends and family, I do not see very often, know how thankful I am of them and the answer was so simple. Write a thank you note!

My mother always had us writing thank you notes for gifts we had received at a very young age and it has carried over to my adulthood. Write a thank you note, not necessarily for a gift but for the relationships you treasure.

Thanksgiving is upon us and I, like many of you, have SO much to be thankful for this year. I have the honor of hosting the Thanksgiving meal at our home this year and I have found numerous ideas to share with you on how to make it a stress-free and beautiful day.

Country Living if full of great ideas for decorating your Thanksgiving table. The "Giving Thanks" candles above are simplistic yet classic. All you need are pillar candles, felt and glue.

This rustic approach to the harvest table is very warm and welcoming. This would be perfect for an intimate Thanksgiving meal.

Place cards are always nice. Especially when you have a large group of people coming to dinner. This is a place card that can double as a take home gift as well.

Fall Decorating - Vases of Plenty

One of my tried and true "emergency" decorating fall backs are vase fillers. If I need a centerpiece or a space filled with some color I empty a vase and fill it with whatever I have around the house. The possibilities are endless. Have some coffee beans and a candle? Apples? Lemons? Crayons? Just go shopping in your home.

These vase fillers, by Pottery Barn, help create a beautiful harvest display.

If your lawn is covered in leaves and the squirrels have not taken all of the acorns that have fallen then grab a basket and gather some free vase fillers! If you do not have access to these things in your yard you can purchase them most anywhere.

These displays would be at home in your dining room or kitchen counter. Wherever you want to be reminded of the season.

Do NOT use acorns from your backyard. After my mother read my blog post she relayed a story of a Thanksgiving meal she had where acorns were in vases and set in the middle of the table. Who does not like to snuggle? Whether it be with that special someone or your favorite blanket and pillow, snuggling warms the body and heart. I am blessed with a dad who crochets afghans so we have no shortage of beautiful blankets. Shake out those blankets that you put away for the summer and drape one over your comfy chair or sofa so it is easy to grab when you settle down with a good book or movie.

Texture is a big part of comfort as well. Think of your favorite sweater and imagine a pillow covered in that or a blanket made out of that. I recently saw some sweater-knit pillows at Target and Pottery Barn sells them as well. When the temperature starts to drop my natural instinct is to create an environment that feels warm...cozy. This week I will be giving tips on how to dress your home for the colder months ahead. This does not mean you need to repaint your dining room or spend a small fortune. Small accents throughout your home is all you need.

The picture below is of a ledge in my entryway located above my front door. It is the perfect spot to have a seasonal display. (not so perfect for my husband to access) About 90% of the items I already owned. I knew I needed a picture to fill a corner and I took a walk thru my home to see what pictures had warm/autumn colors and just switched it out for another picture. The lanterns were used in the previous seasonal display. The leaf garland was left over from a bridal shower I had hosted and the hay was bought during last years fall clearance. The orange pumpkins were purchased at Wal-mart, the small grape fine pumpkin from Target and the large pre-lit pumpkin from Pier One.

I realize that everyone does not have a ledge like this to display your seasonal items. Entryway tables, mantels, and dining room sideboards are wonderful options for fall decor as well.

My entryway table is decked out for the fall as well. The blessings pumpkins were a great find, last year, at the Family Christian Bookstore. The leaf garland is the same used on the ledge and the vases are filled with brown stones and sticks bought at Target. All of these things were already stored in my basement. That is one of the perks of buying a little here and there during end of the season sales. The holiday or season comes next year and you do not need to purchase anything!

When I hear the word Halloween the first candy that comes to mind is candy corn and candy pumpkins. The sweet and tangy mixture is quite addictive. There are SO many uses for the candy and inspiration for decor that I just had to share.

This is a great whimsical decoration that kid and adult will love. The tissue paper pom poms come in a Martha Stewart craft kit and from my own experience they are very easy to make. Hang them over your food table or hang them from your ceiling throughout the room.

I know I say this a lot but I LOVE this idea! This has got to be one of the cheapest decorating idea's I know of. Go to the dollar store and buy several bags of candy corn and spread them out in a table runner form on your table. TA DA!!!

I don't know how pumpkin carving goes at your house but at mine I empty the pumpkins of their innards and my husband carves the pumpkins. I then roast all of the pumpkin seeds (thankfully this is done ONCE a year) and we enjoy our beautiful pumpkins Halloween night.

Anytime is a good time to throw a party or have your close friends and family over. You don't need to break the bank to provide a lavish spread every time you want people over. I think a cheese and wine party is a wonderful way to have food for your guests but do so on a budget. You might hear the word wine and think "there goes my grocery bill right now" or "what if I don't drink alcoholic beverages". Not a problem.

A great place to buy good and inexpensive wine is Costco. The same wine that my husband and I drink at restaurants we can find at Costco for less than $10. If you don't drink alcoholic beverages I would suggest finding a delicious cider recipe or substitute club soda for the alcohol in your mixed drink recipes. Sparkling grape juice is yummy and still gives the pretty bottle appearance you may be wanting on your table.

You're killing me Smalls! These are s'more's stuff! Alrite now pay attention. First you take the graham, you stick the chocolate on the graham. Then you roast the 'mallow. When the 'mallows flaming... you stick it on the chocolate. Then cover with the other end. Then you scarf. Kind of messy, but good! (As said by Ham Porter in the movie Sandlot)

S'mores are the epitome of comfort snack to me. If the day has been long and hard my husband and I will pour ourselves a tall glass of milk and make s'mores in the microwave. You may think that the only way to make a s'more is over a fire but I beg to differ.

This wonderful invention, that I use, can have you eating s'mores in seconds. I HIGHLY recommend it.

However, this entry is not about making s'mores in your microwave. The Fall is a wonderful time to light up the fire pit and hold a S'more Making party.

Cookie Creatives

This gourmet s'mores table, that was inspired by Jennifer of Cookie Creatives, is exactly what I imagine a s'mores making station to be. There a various flavors of marshmallows, types of graham cracker (honey, chocolate and you could even have cinnamon) and things to sprinkle such as salted nuts and toasted coconut.

The galvanized buckets are perfect containers for the marshmallows and easy to find and Michaels and Walmart. Labeling the s'mores fixings helps avoid a traffic jam at the table.

Your imagination is really the limit of your s'mores making combination's. This tasty treat is made up of gingersnaps, marshmallow and caramel filled chocolate. YUM! You can even include fruit such as bananas and strawberries on your sweet sandwich.

Fall Entertaining - Porch Dining

I have noticed a new concept, to me, showing up in many of the magazines that I subscribe to. The concept being to take your formal dining room furniture and transform your screen covered porch or sun room into your dining space. This is only temporary of course but a wonderful way to enjoy the cooling temperatures in a more formal setting.

In the October issue of Better Homes and Gardens there is an article entitled Natural Attraction that includes a pictures of an informal dining area on the porch. (I've searched everywhere for a digital copy of the article but could not find it...page 49) I love the fall decor of pumpkins placed randomly about the table and a large vase of leaves and flowers at the end of the table. Large bowls of soup, wedges of cheese and loaves of bread complete the fall meal.

Southern Living

Not only do you need to bring your formal dining furniture outdoors but include your fine china and fancy glasses as well. Just look at the beautiful backdrop of fall foliage and I think nature showed up in her best dress.

I have to mention one more periodical that I have garnered a lot of ideas from (in general) for formal porch dining. The Southern Living Easy Entertaining special publication is loaded with goodies. The article entitled Celebrate the Harvest served as the inspiration for this post and illustrates the topic beautifully. It is on newsstands until mid December so PLEASE go out and buy it.

Fall Entertaining - Backyard Movie

I have always liked the idea of having a movie screening for all of your friends in your own backyard. Most seasons are generally conducive for an outdoor movie but the fall just seems made for it. Assuming you have the equipment necessary to show your movie outdoors I'll help you with the extras to make the movie even more enjoyable for everyone.

Pottery Barn

Grab some quilts, blankets and throw pillows to throw on the ground for comfy seating. Be sure to include some chairs for the rear seating so those who don't care to "slum it" on the ground have a comfy seat as well.

Ideal Home

Be sure to have a large basket full of rolled throws for those of us who like to snuggle with something (or someone) while we watch a movie.

Fill inexpensive fabric bins, that can be found at Walmart or Target, with lots of movie munchies. Have bowls of popped popcorn distributed throughout the viewing area.

Colorado Backyard Movies

If there are little one's watching the movie be sure to include fun things like glow-in-the dark bracelets and necklaces for them to wear. The dark may scare some children and flashlights would ruin the movie viewing experience.

Fall - More Inviting Entries

Sunset

One of the many great things about Fall is the abundance of natural things you can use to decorate with. Leaves, acorns, pumpkins, gourds....the list goes on. Pumpkins are one of my favorite Fall things and I will devote an entire week of my blog to the many uses of pumpkins.

I like this take on displaying your house number in a festive manner. Most people don't think of carving pumpkins for a practical purpose but I like the different approach.

Sunset

It is at this time of year that I begin filling pots with things that will stay green from now until next spring. I am not the best waterer in the cold months so things usually stay green until Christmas and I am back to bare pots. This year I vow to be more attentive. (I will let you know how that goes)

This assortment of pumpkins and simplicity of evergreens is beautiful and very welcoming.

I have used kale and winter cabbage to decorate my front porch for many years and have never thought to incorporate white lights into them. This is a beautiful display and can span through the holidays of fall and winter.

Whatever the season, a decorated entry to your home is like a warm hug to all who visit.

What better way to announce to your neighbors that fall has come to your home than to dress up your front porch? Fall foliage is a great filler and brings a punch of color to the area you want to dress up. I know my dad, and many of you who rake piles of leaves every fall, would shake your head at the thought of BUYING leaves to decorate with but do it anyway. Silk leaves are bug free and can be used year after year. I would recommend buying leaf garland for use on tables, mantles and other flat areas you want decorate. (Michaels has a great selection every year) Buy branches of fall foliage to fill tin buckets or vases for a beautiful and dramatic affect.

Better Homes and Gardens

Finding a classy wreath for any season can be a daunting task. I fail to understand why some people feel the need to pack every kind of flower, twig, fruit....you name it into ONE wreath. I have found that when you find one item, be it wheat, red berries, a flower....anything....and build an entire wreath of that object you have a very clean and welcoming wreath. The wreaths above are beautiful examples.

Fall Leaves

Fall is hands down my favorite season and I think I live in one of the best places to experience it. The Shenandoah Valley show's off this time of year and it should. The mountains are splashed with color, there are harvest festivals and pumpkins patches to explore every weekend and college football in abundance.

For the next several months I will be sharing ideas of how to celebrate the season and its' holiday's and soak in every maple leaf, adorable costume and thankful moment.

Home Sweet Home - Other Favorite Rooms

Easily one of my favorite rooms in the house....my bathroom. I wanted a spa-like theme for the master bathroom and I have to say that the wall color was a large contributor to that affect. (Olympic paint - Misty Lake)

The vanity mirrors took forever to find. I never thought it would be so hard to find square mirrors with a silver frame but they are! Home Goods came to the rescue once more with these two great finds.

There is not much to say about this picture other than I LOVE my tub:)

As soon as you walk into our home and look to the right you will see what we call our library/home office. This room holds our DVDs, home computer and one day the Christmas tree. The Hagrid chair, as we refer to it, is the BEST seat in the house.

Located directly across from our library/home office is the dining room. I cannot tell you how happy it made me to finally unpack all of my china and stemware and use my china cabinet again!

Our very functional family room is the most loved room in the house. Our daughters spend hours playing there, football parties are held there and on rare occasion my husband and I can sit on the sofa (together) and watch TV.

To sum it all up I LOVE our new home and I am enjoying it to the fullest.

Home Sweet Home - Isabelle's Room

Isabelle had declared her room to be painted purple and pink before we even broke ground on the house. You may be thinking I have quite the girly daughter and her room is decked out in princess decor. You would be mistaken. Isabelle has the most AMAZING imagination and a very diverse collection of interests. She enjoys playing with Disney princess while at the same time having tea with dinosaurs. Isabelle's room reflects this.

You will notice that I fabric covered letters for Isabelle as well and this is a tribute to her (and my) love for the beach.

Isabelle's room is located over our garage and includes a dormer on the back. The "story time nook" and dormer provide the perfect places to read, play and dream.

I just finished these dinosaurs yesterday and Isabelle loves them. It is nearly impossible to find girly themed dinosaur anything. I bought white canvases at Michaels and used leftover fabric that I had from other projects.

I drew the dinosaurs on packing paper I had leftover from the move and then pinned it to the fabric. Cut out the dinosaur, painted the canvas and then glued the fabric dinosaur to the canvas.

I've already started to collect ideas for girly dinosaur birthday party ideas because both of my girls love them!

I have to say that for a purple and pink room it really is adorable. However, just like her mother who changes her mind all the time, Isabelle informed me yesterday that she would now like a yellow and green room. We are living with the purple and pink for at least one year!

Home Sweet Home - Anna's Room

My daughter Anna has A LOT of spunk for such a small and adorable package. I wanted our home to exude calm and our daughter's rooms were no exception. So as opposed to using bright and bold colors on the walls I chose to accent with them. Anna's room was painted in a soft blue (which matches her eyes by-the-way) and blush pink curtains.

I got the idea of covering wood letters in fabric from Pottery Barn Kids and thought that looked easy enough. WRONG!

I bought the letters from Michaels and the frabric from Walmart. After I cut out the fabric for the letter I tried using a spray glue to attach the two. Very bad idea. This had to be hand glued slowly and by each curve and corner. This was a messy and pretty time consuming project but I LOVE the results. It is definitely worth doing.

Anna has the appetite of a little bird and she hopes around like one too. Hence the nickname "Little Birdie".

The letters were bought at Michaels and painted white. The birdhouses were also bought at Michaels and painted and stenciled by myself. This project cost less than $10 to do and it was SO easy to make!

I continued with the bird theme to the opposite wall with birdhouses purchased at Michaels (again) and painted by myself.

The "storytime nook" is a BIG hit. I bought the mosquito net at IKEA and covered the pillows with the help of my mom. This has become a napping place for the cats as well.

The picture over the bookcase is a gift I painted for Anna's 1st birthday.

Anna loves her room and I must say I'm pleased with it as well.

Home Sweet Home - Landscaping

As you know, I keep binders of ideas I see in magazines so of course I had some ideas of what I wanted our yard to look like. My WONDERFUL husband gave me the reigns (so to speak) to decorate the interior of our home and landscape the exterior. I was intimidated by the idea of picking out plants and knowing how far apart to plant them and so on so we consulted with a landscaper. He came up with some designs and prices and although they were nice they were not what I had envisioned. So we decided to tackle the project on our own and I must say we did a pretty good job.

We found all of our plants at Costco, Lowes, Home Depot and one of the nurseries that the landscaper used. We lucked out in starting this project right as nurseries were discounting their plants for the end of the season and Costco was getting in new plants for the planting season.

This bed is full of Arborvitae, Nandina, Japanese holly, and a Japanese Red Maple.

Ornamental grasses were planted around the heating and cooling unit.

Ruby ornamental grasses really do give off a relaxed and cooling affect. There is always a breeze blowing and the sway of the grasses remind me of sea grasses I so love at the Outer Banks.

We purchased three beautiful Nanchez White Crepe Myrtles to plant along the left side of our yard and a Maple tree that turns a brilliant red in the fall for the right side of the yard. I don't know which will grow faster. The maple tree or my two beautiful girls!

A fire pit was something my husband and I have always wanted so when we saw a Lowes DIY fire pit project we were thrilled. This literally took about an hour to put together. It consists of a wire fire pit and retaining wall bricks. That's it! We cannot wait to have friends over for a S'mores night.

The landscaping turned out better than I could of imagined and I know it will forever be an ongoing project. I just love having a yard of our own to plant in!

Sewing - Room for Inspiration

I LOVE to decorate with a capital L so I have to include a sewing room in this weeks posts. I found this sewing room filled with wonderful ideas on BHG website and that is where all of these idea's will be coming from. These idea's will inspire you to create a place to be creative in whether it be sewing or another hobby you love.

My mother would swoon over this idea. It really reminds me of the old library card catalog system. If you ever see one of these in a yard sale or antique store it is a great organizational piece of furniture.

I cannot sing the praises of pegboards enough!

I know my jaw literally dropped when I saw this idea. So easy and it makes such a statement.

Again, another jaw dropping moment. Pick fabrics that incorporate the colors in the room.

Grab all of the scrap pieces of fabric that have been collecting in your drawers and baskets and make some pin cushions just to you can create one of these functional and decorative pieces.

Sewing - Martha Stewart's projects

As you know, I get a lot of inspiration from Martha Stewart. When I saw this book at my Costco I had to pick it up, even though my first sewing endeavor in years was last week. All I can say is, buy it and learn!

It is FULL of wonderful ideas and the instructions on how to do the projects are very detailed and easy to follow. It even had a section that explains the different types of fabric there are and there are a lot!

You may be thinking, pumpkins...it's July right? Imagine them as great pin cushions! My next project is to make one of these with some left over printed fabric that I have. Ambitious, yes, but I think it will be fun to make and I cannot find what I like in stores so why not make it?

I have come to the conclusion that there is no reason a duvet cover should cost more than $20 and until recently, at Target, I have failed to find one. The whole reason I bought a duvet was so that I could change the cover at my whim. (as it turns out that whim would cost, on average, $55 per cover) This pattern calls for two flat sheets sewn together and voila!

All I can say about this is please grab a pretty pillowcase and make this! It is super easy and adorable.

Sewing - A dangerously addictive thing

You may have noticed that I have been MIA lately and I do apologize. Between packing for our move in a couple of weeks (a 4 & 2 year old slow the process a bit) and learning a new skill, I have had little time to devote here. My postings will be sparse over the next several weeks but I do hope to share many of the great idea's I've come across and some new resources to utilize in the meantime.

I am blessed with a family of great seamstresses and I'm ashamed to say I am only now taking the time to learn the skill. My grandmother is a wonder to watch sew and create. She made my wedding gown and I know that even while I was saying my vows, my grandmother was scolding herself for the "mistakes" only she could notice.

My mother is another skilled seamstress. She made my clothes as a child, even as a teenager indulging me in making a dress one night for an event the following day, reupholstering my forest green sofa into a white one and she is now teaching me how to sew on a sewing machine passed down from my grandmother.

I am creating a "story time nook" for both of my daughter and wanted floor pillows to put in those nooks. I found this wonderful fabric and my mother taught me this past week how to make pillow covers for them.

It is no secret that I am greatly intimidated by the skill of sewing. When my mother suggested making these loop button holes I was assuming she would take on the task but you learn by doing so learn I did and it wasn't hard!

This week I will be sharing some fun (and intimidating but doable) projects that you might like to take on.

Summer Celebration - July 4th decor

I have to say that when I browsed thru my mom's most recent Good Housekeeping magazine I hit the jackpot in July 4th decorating ideas. The closeup picture of this miniature flag wreath in the magazine is much better than this one that I found online so if you can still find the July issue do so!

I REALLY like this patriotic wreath idea. I hate to say it but so many times the July 4th decorations that I see are really tacky. I would be proud to have this wreath hang on my door for much longer than the holiday.

Another simplistic idea but what a statement. White Japanese lanterns with red and blue ribbon attached with double sided tape and you have a great decoration for an indoor or outdoor celebration.

July 4th is a time to celebrate many things. Our freedom, the beginning of summer, and a lot of fun to be had outdoors!
A hot day calls for something cool and sweet to drink. I love these patriotic parasols that you can stick into any beverage. I would even use them to stick into sandwiches to keep them together.

It's easy to fill Father's Day with a lot of "stuff" that we hope relays the message that we appreciate the men in our lives. Take a different approach this year. This will require some planning which I know is hard with everyone's busy schedules but I think it will be well worth it in the end.

This is traditionally "Dad's Day". Make it a day of his favorite things. Favorite food, favorite drinks, favorite games, favorite place to spend the day...you name it. What matters is that you care and you've taken the time to notice these things about him.

I love this idea from Martha Stewart for map coasters. Think of some of your dad's favorite vacation spots or hangouts and make a memorable gift for Father's Day.

My husband loves to play golf so these cupcakes would be a great dessert to a Father's Day meal.

Every year when I return from the beach I come back with shells I've collected and starfish I have bought at little shops and sea glass bought and found. I love to spread them throughout the house to remind me of my trip.

If you cannot make it to the beach this summer there are many stores that carry these treasures for you to purchase.

I have a weakness for decorating children's rooms. It is a room where you can use colors you would not ordinarily use in other parts of the house and your child's imagination can shine. I love how the white backdrop of the walls and ceiling let the focus be on the pink light fixture and bean bag chairs.

You might be thinking, white in a KID'S room?!? Have you lost it?!?

White is the easiest thing to clean. This is from one who has a white sofa with two young children. Trust me.

This is a great example how you can meld boys and girls tastes in one room. IT CAN BE DONE!

Target has an adorable Circo Sea line of quilts, lamps, sheets and curtains for girls and boys. I do not like to buy all of a themed thing but use one to build the rest of your room off of like the lamp or quilt.

I am a firm believer in surrounding myself with color. In some of the first homes that I lived in there was not a single room that was white. If you had asked me 3 years ago if I considered white as a color I would of said no. I have since changed my way of thinking and surprisingly find white a great color, especially when using the coast as inspiration in my home decorating.

As I have mentioned before, my husband and I are in the final stages of building our home and last week I had the task of picking out all of the paint colors for the house. It is VERY easy to get carried away but I feel that if you stick to a few colors but vary the shades a bit you achieve a calming atmosphere and smooth transitions from room to room.

The picture above represents the color scheme I have selected for my house. I found a throw pillow that incorporated blue, green, cream, and a sandy shade and built off of that.

One of the problems I run into while decorating with the coast in mind is to not solely focus on the colors of the water. The sandy beaches, colorful sunrises and sunsets, sea grass and not to mention the colorful homes that line most coastal towns. These bright yellow chair covers are a great punch of color that remind me of the warm sun.

Aside from being my dream kitchen, I think it accomplishes the simplicity and clean lines that a coastal themed kitchen should have. I leave for vacation in a couple of days, to visit my first love (as my husband refers to it) the ocean. Since I have it on the brain (as I always do) I thought I would spend some time on ways to decorate, accent, and simplify your home in a coastal way.

I may live in an area surrounded by mountains but I find every way that I can to bring the coast to my home.
I loved this idea of creating a centerpiece with very large shells. Just looking at it transports me to the beach.

I usually like to send my guest home with something to remember the party by. These teacup candles are a great gift. If you're like me and do not have time to make 25 (give or take) candles in your nonexistent spare time I have an alternative idea for you.

Buy mismatched teacups at your local antique store or flea market. Buy a nice votive candle to sit in the teacup and slip an envelope of tea next to it. Wrap the whole package in some pretty lace or sheer fabric and gather together with ribbon. Who would not enjoy candlelight with their tea?

Whenever I am waiting in line at my local Starbucks I am always drawn to the tea tins they have lining the counter. They all look exotic to me, as if each one has come from a distant land. Some may have traveled from great distances or just a state over but I like to let my imagination go every now and then.

This is why I love this idea of using tea tins as vases for your floral centerpieces. It completes the theme but also sends the mind whirling, trying to find the story behind the tea.

Hydrangeas are a great centerpiece because of their delicate appearance and a few stems can fill a vase easily.

I've always heard of cucumber sandwiches being served at tea parties. I'm not a fan of cucumbers but I do love little sandwiches. Adjust the menu to your taste and that of your guests.

I admit that when it comes to actually drinking tea I prefer it poured over ice and fairly sweet. There are times when a cup of nice warm tea soothes every muscle in my body or forces me to slow down and take a deep, relaxing breath.

When researching the types of tea during a day I found two main categories.

Afternoon Tea

I saw this idea for a Mother's Day party on The Party Dress blog and thought it would be a great idea for a baby shower as well. I do not know of a mother or woman that doesn't love to get their nails done. This party was held at a salon. For those of us who are on a budget that doesn't afford for a trip to the beauty salon for roughly 25 of your closest gal pals I would suggest hiring a manicurist to come to your party location for an allotted time. Each lady will then have their nail polish to take home with them as a party favor!

Mimosas were served at this party and I would suggest serving non-alcoholic mimosas for a morning shower or a nice non-alcoholic sangria for an afternoon shower.

Keep the food light with options such as angel food cake and berries verses a heavy dessert and lots of veggies and fruits for the complimentary food.

For all of you who know me you had to guess that I would have a beach themed baby shower post some time this week. With warmer weather around the corner this theme fits the season. The vintage surf baby shower by the TomKat Studio is adorable! I love the light blue and red combination that was used to decorate for the party.

The oh-so-versatile cupcake works with any theme and is perfect for those of us who despises cutting up a big cake at parties. I loved the shark and beach cupcakes found at Martha Stewart.

For mom's expecting a little girl I like the idea of using varying shades of orange and pink. The soft look of pom poms adds a feminine touch.

Butterfly Themed Baby Shower - Success

Butterfly Wishing Tree

The Butterfly themed baby shower could not of been held on a more beautiful day. The sun was shining (almost too brightly...some of us melted) and there was a gentle breeze that rustled the butterfly wind chimes hanging in the tree.

My first attempt at a Wishing tree turned out very well I thought. The very center of the cylinder is filled with disc shaped styrofoam and is then surrounded by rocks that I had left over from a previous project. The pebble sized moss was a great find at the Dollar Tree and will most definitely be used for future projects. This would be a great table centerpiece but at on a much smaller scale.

Personalized Sugar cookies

Each guest had a bag containing a cookie with their name on it and if their child or children accompanied them there was a cookie with their name as well. They were a lot of work but a great personal touch to the baby shower.

This is a small section of the food buffet. I am very thrilled with the diversity that glass jars possess. I can dress them up for any occasion and they hold odd shaped treats perfectly. This jar of chocolate covered pretzels was a big hit with the children.

This week I will be showing you some great baby shower theme's and ideas. The wonderful thing with baby shower theme's is that most of them can be used as 1st birthday party theme's as well!

Regardless, just have fun with it and it will show in your party.

Butterfly Themed Baby Shower - Decor

There is something about celebrating the sweetness of a new baby coming into the world that turns my insides to mush. Whether it is the mom's 1st, 2nd, 3rd....or more (God bless you!) every baby is worth celebrating.

What a wonderful gift to be able to read all of the well wishes and support from your friends and family after all of the cake has been eaten and the last present opened.

These are just a few of the inspiration idea's I will be using for the baby shower.

Littlest Pet Shop Birthday Cake by Lisa

I have to admit that being able to use my daughter's toys for decoration was very nice to have. I did not even think of it until I was setting up the table and then I realized I would have to ask "permission" to use her beloved toys. Luckily she was so excited to be involved in the whole process of putting her party together that she sprinted to find her toys before I could finish asking her the question.

The popcorn containers were filled with my daughter's favorite kettle popcorn. I have served popcorn before but never in their designated containers. This was great, especially for the young ones, to have something they could hold in their lap instead of trying to steady a plate full of sweets.

Scooby Snacks

Chocolate covered pretzel rods. A birthday party necessity!

Dirt dessert with candy dog bones. This was my favorite dessert I must say.

My pennant banner success. I found the puppy print fabric at our local Walmart. Very easy to put together even without sewing skills. I should know!

My first attempt at making a banner turned out pretty well I thought. I have made another for the baby shower I am helping to host this coming weekend that I will post next week.

This birthday party was a big success in my mind. With a large dose of my daughter's bright imagination, lot's of sugar, and plenty of smiles I think year 4 was welcomed perfectly.
